Last night, Chappell Roan knew she had to bring it to the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields Festival. The last act before festival founder Olivia Rodrigo, Roan turned it out with all of her powers—bolstered by a bold and bitchy, razor-sharp bob.
Roan appeared onstage dressed like one of the Fhloston Paradise space shuttle flight attendants in The Fifth Element: a lilac cut-out crop top, exposed midriff and mini-shirt with coordinating patent go-go boots. (Styled as always by Genesis Webb, it was a reverent recreation of the Jean Paul Gaultier costumes by Michael Schmidt Studios.) In the 1997 movie, the flight crew was quite the mug-off: Natasha Brice, Stacey McKenzie, Genevieve Maylam, and Josie Perez included. Roan’s was just as fab, beginning her set with “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl.”
The look, however, was all about the bob, which was topped with a lavender pillbox hat with wings adorning the sides. Roan’s deep copper red hair was styled—done as per by hairstylist Virginie Pineda—to just touch her shoulders, straight and sleek with mussed up bangs that fell above her eyebrows. Divesting herself of her headpiece further into the set, she got about flicking the bob to the beat: bouncy and breezy in “HOT TO GO!” and sharp-edged enough to take an eye out in “Pink Pony Club.”
Roan’s makeup was by her go-to Dee Carrion, who also did the glam for fellow Daisy Chain Fields performer Doechii. Carrion complemented the lilac look with a soft purple blush diffused across Roan’s face, made deeper as it traveled up to her spiky lashed, sharply lined eyes and temples. Her lips were a deep, sumptuous burgundy.
“You do not…understand…how bad I want a bob now,” Roan captioned an Instagram photo taken behind the scenes of her “The Subway” music video shoot last year, where her curly, cloud-like bob sits above her shoulders. Will the Midwest Princess 2.0 era feature more Bob-ell Roan moments? We hope so.
