How can you make blue eyes stand out?
According to Antonio, technique and placement matter just as much as color. “When it comes to a technique that is a bit simpler, a navy liner is a better alternative to black,” he says. “The similarity in tone to the iris creates a softening effect that makes blue eyes appear larger and more defined.”
He also swears by one often-overlooked step: curling your lashes. “Lifted lashes open the eye and expose more of the iris, which is exactly what you want when you are trying to make the color of the eye the focal point. The curl doesn’t have to be dramatic – even a gentle lift makes a noticeable difference.”
“I love to tight-line the upper eyelid using an espresso brown eye pencil,” says Dempsey. “It really helps to accentuate blue eyes and helps them pop.”
Should people with blue eyes avoid blue eyeshadow?
There’s a bit of a myth that blue-eyed people should avoid blue eyeshadow–but Antonio thinks it depends on the shade. “I would avoid blue eyeshadow on blue eyes as it tends to flatten rather than enhance, blending the iris into the makeup so that neither stands out,” says Antonio. “Similarly, very cool-toned silvers and icy whites can wash out lighter blue eyes rather than complement them.”
That said, there are exceptions. “If you want to lean fully into a monochromatic blue moment, a deep cobalt or midnight navy can be extraordinary when done with intention.”
