Birkins, move over; Margauxs, step aside. A new “It” bag is taking over the streets of New York, and it’s not snuggled in the crook of its owner’s arm, slung over a shoulder, or even draped lovingly across a torso. No, it’s being dragged by two large straps and rolling along on a quintet of wheels, stuffed with dirty laundry or maybe this week’s groceries. It’s the Hulken Rolling Tote, and it’s taken the city by storm.
“I wanted something that could make life a bit more practical, but I have this philosophy that I want to make my everyday life feel chic,” said Sahilee Waitman, who works in tech and picked up a reflective silver Hulken in size medium back in February. Now she carries it multiple times a week for grocery store runs and vintage shopping. “I was looking for something that would feel sleek and elevated, but everyday.”
It was earlier this summer when I started noticing street corners and crosswalks in my Brooklyn Heights neighborhood suddenly taken over by the Hulken. Often you’d hear the small rumble of its wheels before spotting it, often with a shiny reflective exterior in cheery colors like bright pink or sky blue. The Hulken comes in three sizes, sits atop five wheels that rotate 360 degrees, folds down flat, and is outfitted with two sets of handles (one shorter, the other longer), so people of any height can grab one and drag it along. It is a clever, distinctly useful item, made for chaotic life in New York where people often carry large hauls for short-to-medium distances. It easily replaces the backpack, Ikea tote, and rolling cart of yore. If an Hermès bag signals an affinity with a certain economic class, one that lives in a rarefied version of New York with chauffeured cars, brownstones, and a cadre of helpers, the Hulken, in contrast, is the bag of the people, of common city dwellers running around in the streets, running their errands, living their lives. Consider it the Birkin of the proletariat.
It ranges in price from $100-$125, and has spawned dupes at Walmart and Shein. “I was quite skeptical in the beginning,” Waitman told me. “I was like, ‘OK, let’s see how this bag really performs in the streets of New York.’ I just remember thinking, like, Let’s see if it’s worth my $110 because, for the average person, even for a New Yorker, you want to be chic, but you also don’t want to pay a premium price for something.” She was so inspired she posted a TikTok about it, saying that it was “worth every penny, unfortunately.”

Lizzie Wheeler of Studio Dorothy, a vintage shop that specializes in bridal, received her first Hulken bag as a birthday gift two years ago and immediately found it a revelation. She traveled from her home in Brooklyn to a shoot on the Upper East Side carrying 10 wedding dresses by subway and didn’t need any assistance. “That was unreal,” she recalled. “There’s no way in my life that that wouldn’t have resulted in me having multiple garment bags and an Uber XL.” She now owns four, including one in silver and navy. “The way they made it metallic, it’s very girlie-pop,” she says. “I think they know who they’re talking to—they’re talking to stylists and photographers and florists. They were like, ‘Okay, the Ikea bag has a signature color,’ and they were like, What can we do that is signature? And they knew it was the girlies.”
“It’s almost like Tabis,” she added. “It’s like a wink and a nod, like ‘I don’t work in an office.’”
According to Google, the sudden explosion of Hulkens I saw in the streets was not a hallucination on my part. Their search data shows the term Hulken hit an all-time high this year, with the specific term “Hulken medium” up 110% year-over-year, and “Hulken rolling tote” up 90%. Geographically speaking, New York is actually not even doing the most searching—it comes in 4th, following Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas.
And despite the Hulken’s minor dalliances with the fashion world in earnest (Supreme, Susan Alexandra), that’s not to say there isn’t a world where it breaks through from a carryall of the everyday man to a more exalted position.
“If it had come out in 2018, Demna would have sent one down the Balenciaga runway,” Wheeler said. “It would have been the DHL hoodie and a Hulken.”
