The BAFTA TV Awards are underway at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with Adolescence and Celebrity Traitors so far winning multiple gongs.
The grandest night in British TV is unfolding as some of the biggest stars around the world including Colin Firth, Aimee Lou Wood, Taron Egerton and Matt Smith go head-to-head.
Netflix’s Adolescence dominates the nominations. Owen Cooper and Christine Tremarco were the first two winners in the supporting actor and actress categories, with Tremarco pulling a bit of a surprise beating Adolescence co-star Erin Doherty. Adolescence then won Best Limited Drama.
Doherty and Wood are both nommed in two different categories, the former for Disney+’s A Thousand Blows, which has numerous nominations. Firth, Smith and Egerton face off in a crowded Leading Actor category.
Watch on Deadline
The BBC’s top-rated show of the year, The Celebrity Traitors, has won for Reality and Memorable Moment. It has also been a good night for Amazon’s Prime Video, which has scooped two gongs for Last One Laughing.
Steve Coogan, who spoke to us on the red carpet about The White Lotus, won for Actor in a Comedy. The Studio took home Best International, with Seth Rogen dedicating his win to Catherine O’Hara.
Meanwhile, Gaza: Doctors Under Attack, which was controversially dropped by the BBC and picked up by Channel 4, has just won for Current Affairs. Producer Ben de Pear questioned on stage whether the BBC will drop his team’s acceptance speech attacking the corporation’s decision from its broadcast later.
The BAFTA Craft Awards took place two weeks back, with Adolescence grabbing two for director and sound. The Netflix series, which was created by Graham and Jack Thorne, could therefore be well on its way to a record-breaking BAFTA feat come later tonight.
Hosted by Greg Davies, the awards represent BAFTA and the BBC’s first big test since the Film Awards, when tourette’s campaigner John Davidson involuntarily yelled a racial slur at the stars of Sinners. We reported on Friday about how the BBC has been nervously prepping for the big day.
Deadline will be covering the event and updating the winners list live.
