Tony Award winner Adrienne Warren (Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) will join the cast of the Broadway revival of David Auburn’s Proof next month, taking over the role of Claire from the departing Kara Young, producers announced today.
Young is leaving the show on Sunday, June 28, due to a previously announced commitment to Lincoln Center Theater’s upcoming The Whoopi Monologues, a reimagining of Whoopi Goldberg’s 1984 solo Broadway play adapted for an ensemble of women, including Young and Kerry Washington. Previews for that show begin July 7.
Warren joins Ayo Edebiri, Don Cheadle and Jin Ha in Proof, directed by Thomas Kail, on Tuesday, June 30 at The Booth Theatre.
Warren was most recently seen onstage in the New York City Center Encores! staging of Michael John LaChiusa’s The Wild Party, and last year she appeared as Cathy in the revival of The Last Five Years alongside Nick Jonas. She will appear in the upcoming indie film Shadow Dance.
Young herself was a last-minute replacement in Proof for Samira Wiley (Orange Is The New Black), who withdrew from the production weeks before previews began due to what a show spokesperson called a “treatable medical condition.”

In Proof, Edebiri plays Catherine, the brilliant but restless daughter of renowned mathematics professor Robert (Cheadle) who is thrust into turmoil when a notebook containing a revelatory mathematical proof is discovered after his death. Warren’s character, Claire, is Catherine’s sister, newly arrived from out of town who attempts to take over the planning of their father’s funeral.
