At the Chengdu Auto Show last year, SAIC launched the new MG4, deeming it “the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state” electric vehicle.
Deliveries began in China in December 2025, priced from 102,800 yuan ($14,500) for the semi-solid-state battery variant. The standard MG4 starts at just 68,800 yuan ($9,800).
All other MG4 variants are powered by either a 42.8 kWh or a 53.95 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing CLTC ranges of 437 km (271 miles) and 530 km (330 miles), respectively.

The semi-solid-state model, on the other hand, uses a 53.95 kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion battery, delivering 530 km (330 miles) of CLTC range.
In March, SAIC announced that the first electric SUV would join the MG4 family. The MG 4X will also use a semi-solid-state battery, the company said, even in the entry-level model.
While the electric SUV was expected to launch in Q2 2026, SAIC MG confirmed it will open blind pre-orders on May 11.
SAIC will reveal more details next week, but the company previously said the electric SUV “boasts a range starting 510 kilometers (316 miles)” under CLTC conditions. However, in March, China’s MIIT batch of new vehicle filings revealed the MG 4X will be available with two battery sizes.

The first is the same 53.9 kWh battery as the standard model, providing a CLTC range of up to 510 km (316 miles). Buyers will also be able to choose from a larger 64.2 kWh CATL-supplied LFP battery that delivers 610 km (379 miles) of range.
The base MG 4X model is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 125 kW (167 hp). Higher-priced variants will use a more powerful 150 kW (201 hp) electric motor.

The standard MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. It is about the size of the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3.
Measuring 4,500 mm in length, 1,849 mm in width, and 1,621 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,735 mm, the 4X is slightly longer and taller than the standard model. It’s closer to the size of BYD’s popular Yuan Plus (sold as the Atto 3 overseas).

The MG 4X’s interior is loaded with plenty of digital screens and SAIC’s latest safety and convenience features. SAIC said the electric SUV will feature its new intelligent cockpit, developed in partnership with Chinese smartphone maker Oppo.
Like the new MG 4 with a semi-solid state battery, the 4X also features a massive 15.6″ central infotainment display with 2.5K resolution and a smaller driver cluster.

The automaker previously said that by reducing the liquid electrolyte content to just 5%, the semi-solid-state EV battery significantly reduces the risk of combustion and improves the cycle life. During two needle penetration tests, the battery produced no smoke, fires, or explosions after two hours, which SAIC MG said was an industry first and exceeded industry standards by 20%.
On May 7, local reports claimed the new MG 4X began arriving at dealerships in China ahead of its upcoming launch on May 11.
While the MG 4X will go on sale in China next week, SAIC is set to introduce the new battery tech in Europe by the end of 2026.


MG is “setting a new benchmark,” the company said as the first manufacturer to achieve mass production of semi-solid-state EV batteries.
It’s new semi-solid-state battery tech, MG SolidCore Battery, has been “refined to accommodate regional road conditions, climate variations, and regulatory requirements.”
The new battery tech enables longer driver ranges, faster charging speeds, enhanced safety, and improves performance in cold weather. The solid-state electrolytes within each cell also form a protective layer that extends battery life.
The MG4 EV Urban, as it will be called, is expected to launch in Europe with the same battery, but on the WLTP scale, driving range will likely drop to around 400 km (248 miles).
