At the world premiere of “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which landed in theaters on May 1, director David Frankel joked that the movie had absolutely no marketing budget to speak of. Of course, the incessant headlines surrounding its press tour and the plethora of brand collaborations we’ve been privy to these past few months — from fringe skirts at Walmart to Tweezerman nail files — paint a different picture. As for the latest initiate of the sexy, editorial-chic universe helmed by Miranda Priestly? It’s the Brazilian flip-flop giant Havaianas, which has just announced an all-new, “The Devil Wears Prada 2″—themed shoe line for spring called the Puffed Family.

Operating under the slogan “if it’s not heels, it’s Havaianas,” the capsule encourages shoppers to kick off their Manolos and treat their feet to something even more statement-making (not to mention comfortable). It’s comprised of four distinct flip-flops — the Havaianas Puffed Up, Maxi Puffed, Over Puffed, and Luna Puffed — all of which have something “groundbreaking” to offer, as Priestly would say. Think puffed-up or else intertwining, serpent-like straps; height-happy, dual-layer outsoles; and the kinds of colorways that can transition you from “client meeting at Dior” to “first date” in no time (I won’t say more for fear of spoiling the plot of the iconic film’s second installment if you haven’t yet seen it).

Clearly, these intentionally exaggerated silhouettes are nothing if not fashionable — putting the thong sandal trend that reigned supreme last summer back into the spotlight while giving you a carte blanche to be your most confident self, whether you’re an assistant or the head of the entire features department.
At the time of this writing, you can only view the collection at havaianas.com, as the site sends you to the womenswear retailer Shopbop if you want to actually buy it. In terms of the number of styles on hand there, one sold out and the other is still seeing strong inventory. Specifically, the aforementioned more-is-more Havaianas x Devil Wears Prada Over Puffed Sandal has gone the way of the Dodo (unsurprisingly, considering its mix of the comfort-forward and the eye-catching).
What can still be shopped: the Havaianas x Devil Wears Prada Slim Square Flip Flop, which wasn’t advertised in Havaianas’ marketing copy but is just as worth your time. After all, it takes a flip-flop model that has sold out at Havaianas every year like clockwork (Gigi Hadid even designed her own pair) and dolls it up with motifs that have significance in both movies. Pitchfork-equipped heels, Priestly’s glasses, and handbags that every DWP fan will appreciate are all fair game on this sandal pair’s uppers.

Havaianas x Devil Wears Prada Slim Square Flip Flop

Apart from lacking a rounded toe, the Havaianas x Devil Wears Prada Slim Square Flip Flop reads more classic in structure than its Over Puffed counterpart, which boasts puffy, knotted straps and a chunky, two-tiered sole. Its similarly startling red hue avoids all traces of predictable florals — noted, Miranda! — and instead is bold enough to contrast aptly with everything from your light-wash, baggy denim to a peasant skirt outfitted in creamy white.
To promote this pivotal moment, Havaianas has been hosting activations across cities from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo (the locations of its flagship stores) to Paris, Milan (figuring prominently in the sequel), and New York City. The collaboration took over billboards in Times Square, for instance, and is generating quite the buzz online. Most notably, Havaianas made sure the flip-flops walked “The Devil Wears Prada 2” NYC premiere’s red carpet alongside Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep: spotted on attendees like Brazilian fashion influencers Malu Borges and Gabb, as well as style blogger Leandra Medine Cohen.
These tastemakers successfully proved the versatility of the Havaianas x “The Devil Wears Prada 2” releases — teaming them up with faux-fur coats, sharp-shouldered blazers, and billowing, sculptural gowns. Would the editor-in-chief of Runway ever approve of such mashups? Unlikely. But there’s something thrilling about incurring her wrath: with traditionally laid-back footwear this time around.
Indeed, Havaianas fans are busy pondering how its “The Devil Wears Prada 2” rollouts might affect the fictional character. “I saw an ad for Havaianas related to the movie saying to take off your heels and wear flip-flops. Nothing against it, but I wonder if Miranda Priestly would like it? I don’t think so, lol,” shared one Reddit user, effectively sparking a debate on magazine maven–vetted attire to wear to an upcoming screening.
Our suggestion: Go high-low. Corp-core on top, Rio Carnival–type party on the bottom.
