Café Principe RealThe sister hotel of Alfama’s famous property, Memmo Principe Real is the ultimate chic Lisbon rooftop. The Café Principe Real has floor to ceiling glass windows and an open terrace overlooking the city that wouldn’t seem out of place in a cool LA district.Food is some of the best you’ll find from a rooftop location; expect beef carpaccio with truffle and pistachio, tuna tartare and lobster rice. Be sure to request a table outside to get the very best view, and make a booking in advance as it tends to be busy, particularly around sunset.Address: Memmo Principe Real, R. Lumi rooftop barThis cosy terrace almost feels like a private area, with an undisturbed view across Lisbon’s uneven streets, the castle, and the River Tagus. Glass panelling allows for a more open lookout, while seating is chic and simple – simple furniture and comfy cushions mean you can easily spend hours eating your way through the Mediterranean-inspired menu and sipping orange-infused negronis.Given its delicious menu (get the green bean tempura: you won’t regret it) and private feel, this is a popular spot. For that reason, we warn you that you should plan in advance and book ahead of time to secure a tableAddress: Lumi, R. de São Pedro de Alcântara 35, 1250-237 Lisboa

Topo

Topo has a seductiveness that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon something secret. Partly, that’s because it is quite hard to find. Six floors up on the top of an unassuming shopping centre in Martim Moniz, you could easily walk past it. But persevere and you’ll be rewarded with cocktails and mouth-watering petiscos (tapas). The real prize, however, is the view. It overlooks the old town of Mouraria, with the São Jorge Castle standing proudly insight. Head there for sunset, where DJs gently lure you into the night and the party is one that’s too good to miss. Be warned: you’ll almost certainly end your visit here in the early hours of the morning.

Park

Situated on the sixth floor of a car park in the Bairro Alto district, this is an urban twist on the rooftop classic – and almost certainly one of the most popular rooftop bars in the city. Head here for casual cool with a slice of hipster, and enjoy cocktails, sangria and burgers from a terrace decked out with vibrant foliage. The scene is anything but pedestrian, with 180-degree views including the Santa Catarina church, so close you can almost touch it, to the visual punch of the majestic 25 de Abril suspension bridge stretching across the Tagus. Perfect for lazing away an afternoon before DJs pick up the tempo with beats that’ll keep you going till the small hours.

Mama Shelter rooftopMama Shelter brings its fun, irreverent playfulness to Lisbon in the form of this rooftop terrace, where colours clash on cushions and upholstery, and there’s a constant buzz of excitement in the air. Offering a 360-degree view, Portuguese finger food and seemingly constant DJ sets, it’s an ideal spot to get the party started. The cocktail list is long and relatively affordable, and the wine is local. On Saturdays, there’s a brunch that kicks off the weekend nicely, particularly on a sunny day. Bring your sense of fun and some sunglasses (you’ll need them), and you’ll easily be able to while away the hours here.Address: Rnet 10236, R. do Vale de Pereiro 19, 1250-270 Lisboa

Chapitô à Mesa

To reach Chapitô à Mesa you must walk through a cute handmade-jewellery shop, up some stairs, then some more stairs, then, to make it to the terrace – reportedly one of the seven best in the world – you need to go up one more skinny spiral staircase. But it’s worth it. Friendly service, a simple Portuguese menu and, most importantly, idyllic sundowner vistas all greet you on arrival. Be sure to go in the early afternoon to secure a table outside with the best, unobstructed views: there aren’t so many and they’re likely to go early. Then sit back with a white port and tonic and marvel as the sun slowly sinks over the rooftops, the sparkling water and the striking 25th April Bridge beyond. Also, enjoy the fact you are contributing to Chapitô, a non-profit organisation that promotes the development of young people through the performing arts. Bravo.

Limão at H10 Duque de LouléThis is one bar that those in the know are trying to keep secret. The exquisitely designed H10 Duque de Loulé, a boutique hotel in a restored 18th-century building, only opened last year, but its smart little terrace on the 10th floor has proved an instant hit with those looking for something chic and civilised in central Lisbon. The covered terrace opens up into an elegant, exclusive-feeling space, with bold blue and white decor echoing the vista’s restorative hues above and beyond. A great place to delve deep into conversation as you look out over the rooftops towards the river.Address: Limão at H10 Duque de Loulé, Av. Duque de Loulé 81, Lisbon, Portugal

Lost in Esplanada Bar

Here’s something bright and different after all the usual cool, minimalist rooftop bars: a hilltop terrace above the hip Príncipe Real district, decked out with bright pink umbrellas and colourful furniture, creating an invigorating rainbow blast against the cool blue sky. Silk Club

When you want your food, and the people, to be as beautiful as the view, head here. Silk is a super-exclusive restaurant, bar and club on top of a listed building in the fashionable shopping district of Chiado. Dress appropriately and make a reservation, or you could risk not making it past the bouncer; but once in, you’ll see what all the fuss is about – from the fresh and deliciously prepared Japanese cuisine to the minimalist design in moody, opulent hues to the 270-degree views over the city.

SUD Lisboa Terrazza

Located directly on the riverfront, a five-minute taxi ride from Cais do Sodre train station, SUD’s rooftop is a gorgeous space to spend a warm summer day, thanks to the pool, which overlooks the river and the 25 de Abril Bridge.

As the sun starts to set (and guests flock to get the perfect picture of the pink-tinged sky), you’ll likely be treated to a live DJ. This is when the place really shines, and it’s hard not to get caught up in the romanticism of the moment with such a stunning view. Indulge in a cocktail or a cold glass of local wine as you party into the night.

Vasco da Gama Tower Babylon 360ºYou may spot the Vasco de Gama tower before you even land in Lisbon, so big is the tallest building in the country. And while it is a short taxi or Metro ride from the centre of Lisbon, there’s no denying the wonder of this newly-opened bar (which is not open-top, like many others, but offers an incredible view). At 145 metres high, the bar has a natural vertical garden, a cocktail menu inspired by spices, and a regular live music programme, meaning it’s very easy to make a whole evening out of a trip here. There is an entry fee of 15 Euros, but if you want glamour and style, with spaciousness to boot, you might just find that this space is worth splashing out on.Address: R. Cais das Naus 2 21.01, 1990-173 Lisboa
