FN caught a first glimpse of Deion Sanders’ updated Nike Air DT Max ’96 Low sneaker in September and now, the official release is underway.
The Nike Air DT Max ’96 Low, a first-of-its-kind low-top spin on Sanders’ third signature sneaker, is arriving at retailers now. The updated model features a number of major changes, yet the early response on social media has been overwhelmingly positive.

As its name suggests, the Air DT Max ’96 Low converts the cross-trainer into a low-top for the first time, shedding its ankle coverage and adding some distinct material adjustments. The shoe’s claw pattern, which is typically done up all-leather or a leather-and-nubuck mix, sees the addition of a breathable mesh which will make the low-top even better suited for summer weather.
But the biggest change is perhaps the removal of the sneaker’s signature midfoot support strap, an omission which could have been a risky choice given the popularity of strap-equipped trainers over the years. However, in the interest of shedding weight and making the shoe more wearable casually, the changes feel more beneficial than detrimental.

September’s early look saw a Colorado Buffaloes-themed black, white and gold colorway, but the upcoming retail release reverses the placement of the black and white paneling. It’s not yet confirmed if the reversed look that was seen initially will be released at retail.
While some of the energy around Sanders’ Diamond Turf shoes has cooled off in the college football offseason, the former dual-sport star still has one of the most popular signature sneaker lines. In June, Sanders’ Air Diamond Turf 2 will be released in its original San Francisco 49ers-inspired colorway.
The Nike Air DT Max ’96 Low is arriving at retailers now in its debut Black/Metallic Gold/White colorway under style code IF5478-001 for a retail price of $170. While still unconfirmed, a wider Nike Snkrs release is expected to take place on May 22. The updated model will be available in both men’s and grade school sizing.
